ARTIST STATEMENT

I create artworks that bring stillness, clarity, and quiet presence to a space.

My work begins in the space between noise — in the moment where light softens, silence gathers, and the body exhales.

Working across sculptural relief, tonal gradients, and restrained geometry, I explore how form becomes a felt experience.

A single curve.
A shift in tone.
A subtle movement of light.

Each element is intentional — designed not to dominate a space, but to regulate it.

To steady the senses.
To shape atmosphere in a quiet, enduring way.

Trained as an architect, I am guided by clarity of line, spatial balance, and restraint.
This foundation is paired with a deeper sensitivity — an attunement to what cannot be seen, but can be felt.

Each piece is created slowly, by hand, in conversation with light.

Surfaces are built, softened, and refined — allowing texture, tone, and shadow to become a quiet language.

I work with materials not only for their structure, but for how they hold feeling — visually, physically, and atmospherically.

My intention is not to fill a space, but to hold it.

To create artworks that anchor calm, support emotional clarity, and bring a sense of grounded stillness to the environments they inhabit.

I believe art plays a role in the emotional architecture of a space — softening its edges, harmonising its rhythm, and gently drawing its inhabitants inward.

This is a practice devoted to stillness, balance, and spaces that remember how to breathe.

ARTSIT BIOGRAPHY

Sureen Gouws is an architect-trained artist creating minimalist artworks that explore the relationship between form, feeling, and atmosphere.

Born in South Africa and now based in Brisbane, Australia, her practice spans sculptural relief, tonal gradients, and lunar-inspired compositions — each designed to interact with light, space, and perception.

Her work is defined by the balance between architectural precision and intuitive sensitivity.

Created slowly and intentionally by hand, each piece is designed to hold and shape the energy of a space — revealing itself gradually through subtle shifts in texture, tone, and shadow.

Rather than demanding attention, her artworks offer a quiet presence — grounding environments, softening spatial tension, and supporting a sense of calm.

Sureen’s work is collected internationally by interior designers, curators, and private collectors who value restraint, resonance, and emotional clarity within their spaces.

Guided by a belief in art as a form of sanctuary, her practice is devoted to creating works that support how a space is felt — not just how it is seen.

A portion of each artwork supports Operation Smile Australia, extending her practice beyond the studio into meaningful, tangible impact.
